Effective Outdoor Programs Don’t Happen by Accident
Taking people outdoors can look simple from the outside. Pick a trail. Pack the right gear. Check the weather. Gather the group. Go.
But anyone who has spent time leading others outdoors knows that effective outdoor leadership involves much more. Outdoor leaders make decisions about safety, group dynamics, teaching, environmental impact, risk, accessibility, and the needs of individual participants, often simultaneously. They create experiences in which people can learn, explore, connect, and challenge themselves while helping ensure that those experiences are thoughtfully and responsibly facilitated.
Those skills develop through experience, but they can also be taught, practiced, and strengthened.
That idea is at the heart of the Outdoor Leader Training Institute (OLTI) offered by 2nd Nature TREC.
Who is an outdoor leader?
One of the ideas behind the OLTI is that “outdoor leader” describes a much broader group of people than many realize. You might be an outdoor leader if you are a college student preparing for a career in outdoor education or recreation. You might be a classroom teacher who takes students outside, an environmental educator, a camp professional, a parks and recreation employee, or someone working for a nonprofit organization. You might also be a volunteer who leads community outings or a parent or guardian who regularly takes young people into the outdoors. In other words, outdoor leadership happens anywhere someone accepts responsibility for helping others have meaningful experiences outside.
Building practical skills and professional credentials
The Winter 2026 Outdoor Leader Training Institute will be held December 13–17, 2026, at YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Participants can choose among three training experiences and earn multiple credentials:
Wilderness First Aid and CPR
Develop skills for recognizing and responding to injuries and medical situations when professional medical care may not be immediately available.
Day Hike Leader and Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor
Build practical skills for planning and leading day hikes while developing the knowledge needed to teach responsible outdoor practices.
Night Hike Leader Training
Learn how to intentionally and safely facilitate outdoor experiences after dark, when familiar environments can become entirely new opportunities for exploration, sensory awareness, and learning.
Participants can choose the training that best meets their needs or combine trainings to build a broader set of outdoor leadership skills.
Training hours can also count toward North Carolina Environmental Education Certification.
Why Western North Carolina?
Another important part of the OLTI is place. 2nd Nature TREC is based in Western North Carolina, a region where mountains, forests, rivers, trails, public lands, educational organizations, camps, and outdoor programs create an extraordinary environment for learning about outdoor leadership. Black Mountain sits within that landscape. Rather than separating professional development from the environment in which those skills will eventually be used, the OLTI gives participants an opportunity to learn in a setting where outdoor leadership is not an abstract idea. It is something that can be practiced.
Training is ultimately about people
Technical skills and certifications matter. They help outdoor leaders prepare for emergencies, make better decisions, reduce environmental impacts, and facilitate experiences more effectively.
But outdoor leadership is ultimately about people. A well prepared leader can help someone feel safe enough to try something unfamiliar. A thoughtful educator can turn a hike into an opportunity for discovery. A skilled facilitator can help a group become a community. And a meaningful experience outdoors can sometimes remain important to a participant long after everyone has returned home.

Because strong outdoor programs do not happen by accident. They are created by thoughtful, skilled, curious, and well prepared people. And those people never really stop learning.
